Sri Lanka Rugby leave with mighty hopes

The Sri Lankan sevens team will be leaving to Guangzhou from the Bandaranayake International airport tonight. The tournament will be played on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at the University Town Main Stadium and there will be nine teams taking part in the tournament.

Japan and Hong Kong will be the main contenders for the gold and they will be competing with the hosts China along with Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Mongolia, India and Sri Lanka.

The grouping system will be an unorthodox method as there is an uneven number of teams. Pool A will consist of 5 teams- Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and Mongolia whilst pool B will have the remaining four teams- Sri Lanka, Korea, India & China. This means that after the group stage matches the top four teams in pool A will qualify for the quarter finals. All four teams in group B automatically qualify for the quarterfinal round. The top teams in group A will play the bottom teams in group B in the quarterfinal round whilst the top teams in group B will play the bottom teams in group A.

The Lankan team will play their 1st game on Monday the 22nd of November. Sri Lanka will start their campaign by playing hosts China in the second game of the day at 6:50 A.M. Sri Lanka time. Sri Lanka’s second game will be against Korea at 9:40 P.M. The Lions last pool game will be against their neighbors India. This match will be at 1:10 P.M. The quarterfinal round will commence at 6:30 A.M. on Tuesday the 22nd

Furthermore there will be nine women’s teams that will compete for the women’s rugby 7’s medals. China, Thailand, Hong Kong, Korea, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Japan, Singapore and India will field women’s teams. Unfortunately Sri Lanka has not fielded a team. The girls from Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore are tipped to be the medal contenders in this tournament.
